Historical Visit to the Greek Theatre of Taormina

Date: Tuesday 14/10/08

The Greek Theatre of Taormina is the second classical theatre in Sicily for its magnificence and size after that of Siracusa.

It was built in a wonderful panoramic place from which you can see the Etna Vulcan and the Ionian Sea.

It has a length of 120 m, a width of 50 m and a height of 20 m. It is divided in three parts: stage, orchestra and cavea. The most important part is the stage because it partially preserves the original form.

The cavea, built in rock, is the space for the tiers of seats while the orchestra divides the stage from cavea.

It is built in Hellenistic period, through levelling the top of the hill. It was enlarged and changed during Roman period. Recently have been made several works of repair, but the Greek Theatre is currently in function and performs a lot of plays.

A guided tour through the Greek Theatre is planned for those attending the EasyWay Conference after Tuesday’s Opening Plenary Session.

For who is planning to stay some extra days in Taormina, we welcome visitors to its surprising cultural heritage and suggest other important venues to be visited here
